At the next campground, they float down a river that also becomes very crowded and ends with Greg losing his swim trunks. They have a few misadventures at first, including overcrowded campgrounds and taking a swim in a fish hatchery pond. They spend hours cleaning up the motorhome then set out in search of adventure. By the time they check out, Greg is worried about all the things that might happen. He tells them how to avoid bears and ticks, and sells them a snakebite kit, flare gun, and compass. Their adventure begins with a trip to the store for camping supplies and the clerk's advice makes Greg uneasy. They discover Greg's Uncle Gary has abandoned a motor home and that it provides the perfect opportunity to get away from Gramma's basement. Dad is working from home and the family is on a tight budget but Mom is determined they will do something fun as a family. They are often bored though Mom assures them they are benefiting from using their imaginations. Greg is at the mercy of Manny's early bedtime and is sharing a futon bed with Roderick. Greg's parents, his older brother Roderick, and his younger brother Manny are in the single room abiding by Gramma's rules, including that they stay out of sight when she has friends over.
